OVERVIEW

The Rémy Carriat Tannerie was built in 1927; it is located along the Laxa river in the lovely touristic village of Espelette, in the heart of the Basque country in South-West France.

The Tanneries specifically work bull poney hides from European stocks as well as buffalo sherpas tanned in Pakistan. Carriat leathers have the natural marks of animal life : grain wrinkles, blood veins and shades show the authentic features of this living material. Sensual, Carriat leathers live and grow in beauty each day. They are mainly used for accessoires, but also in the field of furniture, saddles, shoes, bookbinding, and many other outlets where leather is of prime importance.

At the start of the new millenium, after complicated years, the Carriat Tannerie modernised its working tools and enlarge its production teams.

The Tannerie has developed a full complement of biological treatment and physical-chemical which reduces in very significant proportions flows generated by its industrial activity. Under an agreement with the town of Espelette, pretreated effluents are admitted and treated in the municipal biological treatment plant, mixed with the urban effluents.

The Tannery conducts a R&D activity, in order to make its production processes cleaner. It takes the EU guidelines REACh fully into account, together with its suppliers and customers.
