General info

Peter thought leather was just leather until he was made redundant from his job as a farm worker. His brother and brother-in-law already worked at Pittards, so he thought he would give it a look. He was expecting a messy job and it was certainly an eye-opener when he turned up for his first day. But now, he says he loves his job as so much goes into making leather and it is still a hands-on process that requires skill.  He says that he will be ‘In the industry until I retire’.

Peter is Production Supervisor for several departments, ensuring that the necessary quality checks are done, sorting out any problems that arise  and, most importantly, making sure that the leather is at the standard that it should be. The product is highly variable and he gets great satisfaction from getting it right.

This is a challenging but enjoyable and intellectually stimulating role in which people skills are of great importance. He has to organise his staff to ensure that at any one time, the right people  are in the right places. However, his working environment is a friendly one and he receives a lot of support from the company’s management.

Peter left school without qualifications but this has not stopped him progressing as his job is dependent upon his experience and instinct. In fact, he has moved from unskilled to skilled roles and on to be a supervisor. He did not think he would get as far as he has and is very proud of his job and what he has achieved. He believes the industry offers possibilities for anyone who is willing to work hard and the option for a career for life.
