The societal role of the leather sector

Leather production fulfils a fundamental role in our society. It recovers the hides and skins that result from the production of meat for human consumption and transform them into a noble material that finds applications in a myriad of consumer products. It thus prevents a difficult waste disposal problem in the meat industry and contributes with a useful and appealing material to our modern lifestyle generating wealth and employment.  Tanning is, however, an environmentally intensive activity that can carry adverse effects to water, air and soil if the plant does not apply pollution prevention techniques. Pollutants need to be removed from effluents, certain emissions to air need to be captured and waste needs to be minimised. The European leather industry subscribed in 2001 the UNEP Declaration of Cleaner Production and aims a sustainable development.     The Leather-producing sector in Europe is a leading player in the Global market. With its ……..[xiv] companies and ……….[xv] workers, an annual turnover of……….[xvi] Euro  it is a small but stable industrial sector. It is a mature industry but not in decline. It is a sector that promotes the values of our culture and the prestige of our lifestyle throughout the world. …………..[xvii] In this context ………[xviii] has always cared to be a socially and environmentally responsible firm.  We are a member of ………[xix] that is affiliated to COTANCE since……..[xx] and contribute to the sector’s associative goals in terms of Social Dialogue, Image, Sustainable Development, Research & Development, Regulatory Development, Standardisation, etc. We notably participate in ……………[xxi]. We apply the COTANCE-ETUF:TCL Social Code of Conduct[xxii] of core labour standards in all our premises.  ………….[xxiii] has developed the following activities of social relevance:-……….-……….-……….[xxiv]
